The Uhuru Torch is expected to launch, inaugurate, inspect and lay foundation stones for 54 development projects worth Sh23 billion in Kagera Region this year.
Speaking to journalists on August 26, 2026, Kagera Regional Commissioner Colonel Yahya Kido said the Uhuru Torch will arrive in Muleba District from Geita Region on August 30, 2026, before being carried across all eight councils in Kagera.
According to Colonel Kido, the torch will cover approximately 1,230 kilometres, reaching 54 development projects across the region.
Of the projects, 25 will have foundation stones laid, five will be officially opened, 11 will be launched, and 13 will be inspected.
The projects are spread across key sectors, including water, health, education, infrastructure, energy, youth economic empowerment, and creating a conducive environment for investment.
Colonel Kido said the main message of this year's Uhuru Torch campaign focuses on strengthening peace, unity and national solidarity under the theme:
“Tanzania belongs to all of us; let us stand together to bring development.”
He added that the Uhuru Torch campaign will also continue to educate and mobilise citizens on the fight against corruption, malaria, HIV/AIDS and drug abuse, while promoting the importance of proper nutrition.
Colonel Kido called on residents across Kagera to turn out in large numbers to welcome the Uhuru Torch at various locations, saying their participation would demonstrate unity, peace and solidarity among the people of the region.
“I call upon all citizens to turn out in large numbers to welcome the Uhuru Torch in Kagera. Let us receive it with excitement and celebration when it arrives in our areas as a symbol of unity, peace and solidarity among us, the people of Kagera,” Colonel Kido said.
He further urged residents to participate in activities at reception points, along roads, at project sites and during overnight celebrations across all districts.
The Uhuru Torch is expected to conclude its activities in Kagera on September 6, 2026, before being handed over to Kigoma Region on September 7, 2026.
