Tanzania has strengthened its cooperation with Italy in transport infrastructure development after the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) signed a strategic partnership agreement with FS Engineering and ITS Engineering of Italy aimed at improving railway systems and advancing modern infrastructure projects.
The agreement was witnessed by Tanzania’s Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, during a signing ceremony held on August 6, 2026, at the headquarters of Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Rome.
The ceremony was also attended by Italy’s Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Edoardo Rixi.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by TRC Director General Mr Machibya Masanja, FS Engineering Chief Executive Officer and Director General Dr Dario Lo Bosco, and ITS Engineering Director Mr Michele Titton.
The partnership is expected to enhance technical cooperation between Tanzania and Italy through knowledge sharing, technology transfer and professional expertise in railway, transport and infrastructure development.
Under the agreement, FS Engineering will provide consultancy services covering engineering designs, feasibility studies, technical assessments and strategic solutions to support the implementation of transport infrastructure projects in Tanzania.
The company will also assist Tanzania in adopting advanced technologies in digital systems, infrastructure safety, sustainability and innovation to improve the efficiency of railway operations and project management.
A major feature of the partnership is the introduction of FS Engineering’s Digital Control Room, a modern platform designed to enable real-time monitoring of large infrastructure projects through digital technologies, drones and data analytics.
The system is expected to improve supervision of projects, strengthen safety standards, increase efficiency and provide reliable information for decision-making during infrastructure development.
Speaking after the signing, representatives from TRC, FS Engineering and ITS Engineering said the agreement marked a new phase of international collaboration that would support Tanzania’s ambition to develop reliable and sustainable transport networks.
The partnership comes as Tanzania continues investing in railway infrastructure, including the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), as part of efforts to improve passenger and freight transport, enhance regional connectivity and support economic growth.
Through the cooperation, Tanzania is set to benefit from Italy’s engineering experience while strengthening local capacity in modern railway technology and infrastructure management.
