Tanzania’s judo athletes are set to take to the mat on Sunday, August 16, 2026, as the Japan Ambassador Judo Cup brings together competitors at Don Bosco grounds in Dar es Salaam.
The tournament is being organised by the Judo Association of Tanzania (JATA) in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Tanzania, with the aim of promoting the development of judo and creating more opportunities for athletes to compete and showcase their abilities.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, JATA Vice-Chairman Andrew Mlugu said preparations for the tournament had been completed and organisers were ready to host the event.
“Preparations have gone well, and we are now waiting for the day of the competition,” Mr Mlugu said.
He said the tournament was also intended to strengthen cooperation between JATA and stakeholders supporting the growth of judo in Tanzania.
According to Mr Mlugu, continued collaboration with development partners is important in creating a stronger environment for athletes, particularly by providing opportunities for competition and talent development.
“We want to work with more stakeholders to develop judo in Tanzania and ensure that the sport continues to grow,” he said.
Winners of the tournament will receive trophies, medals and awards in recognition of their performances.
Mr Mlugu urged members of the public to attend the event in large numbers, saying the tournament would provide an opportunity for fans to enjoy competitive judo while witnessing the talent emerging from Tanzania.
Beyond the competition, the Japan Ambassador Judo Cup is expected to contribute to efforts to raise the profile of judo in Tanzania and strengthen sporting ties between Tanzania and Japan.
