Diaspora visit puts Tanzania’s National Museum on global tourism map

By Our Reporter

Tanzania’s National Museum could attract more visitors of African descent from across the world following a special visit by the African Diaspora Development Institute (ADDI), highlighting the growing potential of heritage tourism.

The delegation, led by ADDI founder and president Ambassador Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao of Zimbabwe, visited the National Museum on August 26, 2026, as part of efforts to deepen understanding of Tanzania’s history, culture and heritage.

The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to explore Tanzania’s historical journey and the role played by the National Museum in preserving and presenting the country’s cultural heritage.

For Tanzania, the engagement offers an opportunity to strengthen cultural diplomacy while using the country’s heritage assets to broaden the tourism sector beyond traditional attractions such as wildlife and beaches.

The National Museum houses important aspects of Tanzania’s history and cultural identity, making it a potential destination for members of the African diaspora seeking to reconnect with the continent and understand its diverse historical experiences.

The visit also underscores the potential for stronger partnerships between Tanzania and diaspora organisations to promote heritage tourism and create greater awareness of the country’s museums and historical sites.

Beyond attracting visitors, increased interest in cultural tourism could generate opportunities for local communities and businesses involved in accommodation, transport, tour guiding, handicrafts and other tourism-related services.

The engagement is therefore expected to contribute to efforts to position the National Museum as more than a place for preserving historical collections, but also as a gateway through which visitors can connect with Tanzania and Africa’s shared heritage.

As Tanzania prepares for increased international visibility, including through major tourism and sporting events, greater promotion of its cultural heritage could help ensure that visitors experience not only the country’s natural attractions but also its history, traditions and identity.
