Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has expelled former Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi from the ruling party, a day after he resigned from the government position and announced his retirement from politics and public service.
The decision was announced on Thursday by CCM Secretary-General Ambassador Asha-Rose Migiro following meetings of the party’s Central Committee and National Executive Council held in Dar es Salaam under the chairmanship of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Ambassador Migiro said the party’s top decision-making organs reviewed information concerning Dr Nchimbi before unanimously deciding to terminate his membership.
“After reviewing all the available information, it was unanimously resolved that, due to violations of ethical standards, he should be expelled from membership. CCM has reached this decision, and he is no longer a CCM member,” Ambassador Migiro said.
The expulsion comes less than 24 hours after Dr Nchimbi resigned as Vice President and announced his decision to retire from both active politics and public service.
His departure from the Vice Presidency and subsequent expulsion from CCM mark a major turn in the political career of a senior figure who has held several government and party positions.
The party did not provide further details on the specific conduct or incidents it considered to constitute the ethical violations cited in its decision.
The development is expected to attract public attention given Dr Nchimbi’s senior position in the government and his previous role within CCM.
