Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Governor Emmanuel Tutuba has held talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative, Jana Bricco, as the two institutions seek to deepen cooperation on economic stability and sustainable growth.

The meeting, held at the central bank’s headquarters in Dodoma on August 26, 2026, focused on measures being implemented by the BoT to strengthen the resilience of Tanzania’s economy.

Governor Tutuba outlined the central bank’s efforts to maintain stability in the value of the Tanzanian shilling, strengthen foreign exchange reserves through its gold purchase programme and expand access to financial services.

The measures are part of broader efforts to safeguard macroeconomic stability while ensuring that more Tanzanians can participate in the formal financial system.

Ms Bricco congratulated Tanzania on successfully completing two IMF-supported financing programmes—the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

The ECF supports countries in strengthening their economies through concessional financing, while the RSF is designed to help countries address climate-related challenges and build greater economic resilience.

Tanzania received a combined $443.9 million through the two programmes.

The IMF’s recognition comes as Tanzania continues to implement policies aimed at strengthening economic fundamentals, maintaining stability and supporting sustainable development.

The discussions between the BoT and IMF also come at a time when central banks globally are navigating external pressures, including currency movements, changing financial conditions and economic risks associated with climate change.

Governor Tutuba said the BoT would continue strengthening its partnership with the IMF, particularly in advancing policies aimed at preserving economic stability and supporting sustainable development.

The meeting signals continued engagement between Tanzania and the IMF on policies intended to strengthen the country’s economic resilience while supporting long-term growth.
