The government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the management of deep-sea fishing resources as part of efforts to increase the sector’s contribution to economic growth, employment creation and national food security.
Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Damas Kamani, made the remarks during a visit to the Deep Sea Fishing Authority (DSFA), where he reviewed the authority’s operations and discussed measures to improve the performance of the deep-sea fishing sector.
The Deputy Minister was briefed on DSFA’s responsibilities, including monitoring deep-sea fishing activities, issuing fishing licences, managing marine resources and implementing measures aimed at ensuring sustainable use of ocean resources.
Mr Kamani said effective management of marine resources was critical to ensuring Tanzania benefits from its vast ocean potential while protecting resources for future generations.
He called on DSFA officials to maintain high standards of professionalism, transparency and efficiency in carrying out their duties, noting that a well-managed fisheries sector could create more economic opportunities and support livelihoods.
The Deputy Minister also urged closer collaboration between the authority, fishing operators and other stakeholders in addressing illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which remains one of the major challenges affecting sustainable fisheries management globally.
“Protecting our marine resources requires strong cooperation among all stakeholders. Sustainable fishing will ensure that the benefits of the ocean economy reach more Tanzanians,” he said.
The visit highlights the government’s focus on developing the blue economy by improving fisheries governance, promoting responsible fishing practices and unlocking the economic potential of Tanzania’s marine resources.
DSFA Director General Dr Saleh A. Yahya assured the Deputy Minister that the authority would continue strengthening oversight of deep-sea fishing activities while ensuring compliance with national laws, regulations and international standards.
He said DSFA would also continue improving services provided to stakeholders and enhancing measures to safeguard marine resources for sustainable development.
