Tanzania is seeking to strengthen investment in water infrastructure and deepen regional cooperation by participating in the Africa Water Forum currently underway in N'Djamena, Chad.
Deputy Minister for Finance Laurent Deogratius Luswetula is representing Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar at the high-level meeting, which has brought together African Heads of State, finance and water ministers, development partners and experts to discuss practical solutions for improving water security across the continent.
Held under the theme "African Water Forum: From Vision to Action," the forum is focusing on expanding access to safe water and sanitation, increasing financing for water projects and enhancing resilience to climate change.
Hosted by Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Deby in collaboration with the World Bank, the meeting is expected to explore strategies for mobilising greater public and private investment in water infrastructure, irrigation and climate-resilient projects.
Delegates are also discussing ways to strengthen the management of shared river basins, promote regional cooperation and develop National Water Compacts to help countries attract sustainable financing for the sector.
For Tanzania, the forum offers an opportunity to engage development partners, financial institutions and private investors while showcasing investment opportunities in the country's water sector.
The government also expects to draw lessons on innovative financing models, including Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), as it seeks to accelerate implementation of major water projects amid growing demand for infrastructure and limited public resources.
The discussions are expected to support Tanzania's long-term development agenda under the National Development Vision 2050, which aims to increase private sector participation in development projects to 70 per cent.
Mr Luswetula is accompanied by Deputy Minister for Water Engineer Kundo Mathew, Assistant Commissioner for External Finance at the Ministry of Finance Melckzedek Mbise and other government officials attending the forum.
