Tanzanian swimmer Collins Saliboko delivered an encouraging performance at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, setting a new personal best in the men's 50-metre backstroke after clocking 28.31 seconds.
The time shaved more than half a second off his previous personal best of 28.88 seconds, underlining the progress the Tanzanian swimmer has made on the international stage despite competing against some of the Commonwealth's top athletes.
Speaking after the race, Saliboko said he was pleased with the improvement and viewed the result as a reward for months of intensive training.
"I am happy to have improved my personal best. It gives me confidence and motivation to keep working hard and represent Tanzania well in future competitions," he said.
National swimming team coach Kanisi Mabena described the achievement as a positive indicator of the country's growing standards in competitive swimming.
"Breaking a personal best at a major international event shows that our preparations are paying off. It is also a strong source of motivation for the rest of the team as we continue competing," Mabena said.
Saliboko will return to the pool on Saturday for the men's 100-metre butterfly, with his race scheduled to start at 5:23 a.m. Scotland time.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which run for 10 days, have brought together athletes from across the Commonwealth, with Team Tanzania aiming to improve personal performances and compete for podium finishes across multiple sporting disciplines.
