A group of newly recruited police officers in Rukwa Region have donated part of their first salary to children with special needs at Malangali Primary School, in a gesture aimed at strengthening community ties through the Tanzania Police Force's community policing programme.
The officers, from Police Depot K3 Intake 10, used a portion of their first monthly salary to purchase foodstuffs and essential supplies for pupils at the school in Sumbawanga Municipality.
The donation was presented on Wednesday during a ceremony led by Rukwa Regional Police Commander (RPC) SACP Shadrack Masija, attended by district police commanders, senior officers and other members of the regional police force.
Speaking at the event, SACP Masija said the initiative demonstrates the police force's commitment to fostering closer relations with communities by supporting vulnerable groups.
He urged officers to continue engaging with communities beyond their law enforcement responsibilities, noting that acts of service and compassion help build public confidence in the police.
"The police are part of the community. Supporting those in need is one way of strengthening the partnership between citizens and the force," he said.
Teachers at Malangali Primary School welcomed the support, saying the donation would help improve the welfare of the pupils while sending a strong message that children with special needs are valued members of society.
They also commended the officers for taking time to interact with the pupils and provide guidance, describing the visit as an encouragement to the children and the school community.
The pupils expressed their appreciation through songs and messages of thanks, celebrating what teachers described as a memorable day of kindness and inclusion.
The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on community policing, which encourages officers to work closely with residents and contribute to social development alongside their core responsibility of maintaining law and order.
