Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the country gets a new Constitution, saying the process remains a key priority under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.
Dr Nchimbi made the remarks while opening the 15th Annual General Meeting of members of the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), held at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam.
He said President Samia has a strong commitment to the constitutional reform agenda, noting that the issue was included in the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) manifesto and the government has pledged to implement it.
“The issue of a new Constitution has been discussed since 1992 following the reintroduction of the multiparty political system. The Sixth Phase Government has committed itself to ensuring this process is carried out for the benefit of Tanzanians,” Dr Nchimbi said.
He urged citizens to give the constitutional reform agenda the seriousness it deserves to ensure it is successfully implemented during the current period.
The Vice President also stressed the importance of protecting human rights, describing them as a foundation for peace and stability in any nation.
He said the government would continue fulfilling its responsibility of ensuring citizens live in a safe environment without fear.
Dr Nchimbi, however, noted that differences of opinion between the government and human rights defenders are normal in a democratic society, saying not every issue must receive unanimous agreement.
“Tanzania is a country of people with different understandings and views. It is important to recognise that human rights defenders are key stakeholders in building the nation,” he said.
He added that human rights defenders have an important role in supporting the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050, which emphasises good governance, public participation, equality and the creation of a rights-based society.
Dr Nchimbi said the government would continue creating a conducive environment for human rights institutions to operate effectively and contribute to national development.
He assured human rights defenders of continued cooperation and said the government would pay attention to their safety and security to enable them to perform their duties without fear.
The THRDC meeting brought together human rights stakeholders to discuss progress, challenges and strategies for strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights in Tanzania.
