Mbeya District Commissioner Solomon Itunda has urged bodaboda riders in the city to comply with road safety regulations and support security agencies in efforts to maintain peace and public safety.
Speaking during the General Assembly of Bodaboda Riders held at the Field Force Unit (FFU) grounds in Mbeya, Mr Itunda said motorcycle taxi operators play a critical role in society due to their extensive interaction with residents and their presence across communities on a daily basis.
He said the riders could make a significant contribution to crime prevention by sharing timely information with law enforcement authorities on suspicious activities and individuals involved in criminal acts.
“Bodaboda riders are among the people who interact with many citizens every day. Their cooperation with security organs is important in strengthening community safety and maintaining peace,” he said.
Mr Itunda also cautioned riders against engaging in activities or groups that could undermine public order, stressing that peace and stability remain fundamental to economic growth, investment and social development.
He noted that preserving peace is a collective responsibility and called on transport operators to continue supporting government efforts aimed at fostering a secure environment for residents and businesses.
The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities to reduce road accidents involving motorcycles, which remain one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities on the country’s roads.
Representatives of the bodaboda riders pledged to strengthen cooperation with the government by observing traffic laws, reporting criminal activities promptly and participating in initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in Mbeya City.
The meeting underscored the growing role of transport operators not only in facilitating mobility and economic activity but also in supporting community-based security initiatives.
