Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo has ordered a crackdown on brothels and activities that violate community morals, saying authorities will take firm action against individuals involved in exploiting children and engaging in practices that threaten social values.
Mpogolo issued the directive during a public meeting with residents of Zingiziwa Ward in Dar es Salaam, where he addressed citizens’ concerns and outlined measures to tackle challenges affecting the community.
He said the government would not tolerate businesses or activities that expose children to abuse and exploitation, calling on residents to cooperate with authorities in reporting suspected cases.
“I am directing a serious crackdown on brothels and acts that undermine morals. The government will not tolerate anyone involved in such activities or those who exploit children,” Mpogolo said.
The District Commissioner said authorities had received reports from Zingiziwa Ward involving a person suspected of exploiting young girls by involving them in inappropriate activities in exchange for payments ranging from Sh3,000 to Sh5,000.
He described the alleged acts as a serious violation of children’s rights and human dignity, stressing that protecting children remains a key responsibility for both government institutions and the community.
Mpogolo said the suspect had already been arrested by the Police Force, with investigations underway before the matter is taken through the legal process.
He commended the police for their swift response, saying early intervention helped prevent further harm and demonstrated the importance of cooperation between citizens and security organs.
The DC urged local leaders, including street chairpersons, to strengthen cooperation with law enforcement agencies by providing information that can help identify and eliminate activities that endanger children and families.
He said economic hardships should not be used as justification for involving children or women in activities that violate their dignity, urging the community to stand together against practices that threaten the wellbeing of future generations.
Mpogolo also called on religious leaders and community members to play a greater role in promoting positive values, saying efforts to fight social problems must go beyond places of worship and extend into neighbourhoods.
Meanwhile, he praised the Regional Police Commander’s Office and Ilala District Police Commander (OCD) for recent operations targeting immoral activities, revealing that more than 20 people had been arrested.
He said the ongoing operations were part of wider government efforts to strengthen child protection, improve public safety and promote a responsible community environment in Ilala District.
