The government has pledged TZS 750 million to complete the remaining infrastructure at the Kange Health Centre in Maweni Ward, Tanga City, in a move aimed at expanding access to healthcare services for thousands of residents.

Finance Minister Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar announced the commitment during a working tour of Tanga Region, where he inspected several public development projects, including the Kange Health Centre, dormitories under construction at Usagara Secondary School and the rehabilitation of Funguni Primary School in Pangani District.

The minister said the funding would be mobilised after local authorities informed him that TZS 750 million was required to complete the remaining buildings and enable the facility to begin full operations.

"The regional leadership and the Tanga City Council have informed me that TZS 750 million is needed to complete the remaining works. I will engage the Ministry of Finance, the regional administration and the city council to ensure the funds are secured so the health centre can begin serving wananchi," Ambassador Omar said.

The Kange Health Centre is expected to ease pressure on existing health facilities by bringing maternal and general healthcare services closer to residents of Maweni Ward, many of whom have been travelling long distances to access treatment.

Tanga City Medical Officer Dr Stephen Mwandambo and Mayor Abdulrahman Shillow said the facility is expected to serve about 40,740 residents, improving access to essential healthcare, particularly maternal and emergency services.

The city council has also allocated TZS 75 million in the 2026/27 financial year to complete key structures, including an incinerator, an operating theatre and a maternity ward.

During the visit, Ambassador Omar urged residents to adopt preventive health measures, including maintaining clean surroundings, drinking safe water and observing proper sanitation to reduce the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera. He also called on the community to safeguard the facility once it becomes operational.

The minister said the project reflects the government's continued investment in social services across Tanga Region.

According to him, the region was allocated TZS 528.1 billion for development expenditure in the 2025/26 financial year, of which TZS 487.5 billion, equivalent to 92 per cent, had already been disbursed.

Tanga District Commissioner Dadi Kolimba welcomed the government's continued investment, noting that about TZS 350 billion has been channelled into development projects and public services across the district over the past five years.

The completion of the Kange Health Centre is expected to strengthen primary healthcare delivery in Tanga City and reduce the burden on referral facilities by providing essential services closer to communities.
