Tanzania, World Bank move to strengthen national grid for reliable electricity supply

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of Tanzania has stepped up efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply, following discussions between the Ministry of Energy and the World Bank on ways to strengthen the country’s National Grid.

In Dar es Salaam, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, met with representatives from the World Bank to review the findings of a study funded by the bank aimed at improving the performance, stability, and long-term resilience of Tanzania’s power system.

The study has identified key priority areas that will help strengthen the National Grid so that it can meet the growing demand for electricity from households, businesses, and industries.

The recommendations are expected to guide future investments, improve how the system is managed, and support ongoing modernization of the country’s electricity infrastructure.

Eng. Mramba expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its continued support to Tanzania’s energy sector, saying the partnership has played an important role in improving planning, strengthening infrastructure development, and enhancing the quality of electricity services delivered to citizens.

He emphasized that the government will ensure the recommendations from the study are carefully implemented, especially those focusing on better investment planning, improved system operations, and upgrading of the National Grid.

He noted that a strong and stable power system is essential for economic growth, industrial development, and improving the daily lives of Tanzanians.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of building skills among local energy experts. It was noted that one of the major outcomes of the study will be capacity building for engineers at the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) through practical training, technical workshops, and involvement in modern power system research.

This capacity building is expected to strengthen local expertise in managing a growing and more complex electricity network, especially as the country continues to expand power generation and transmission infrastructure.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, TANESCO, and technical experts from the consulting firm GOPA Tech, which is supporting the study.

Stakeholders agreed on the need for strong coordination, continuous investment in technical skills, and full implementation of research-based recommendations to ensure a reliable and sustainable electricity supply for all Tanzanians.

The engagement reflects ongoing cooperation between Tanzania and development partners aimed at building a modern, efficient, and resilient National Grid that supports the country’s development goals and improves service delivery to citizens.
