President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) by the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), in recognition of her contribution to education reforms, human capital development and Tanzania’s growing influence on the international stage.
The honour was conferred on June 4, 2026, by the university’s rector, Oleg Yastrebov, during President Samia’s official visit to Russia.
RUDN University said the award acknowledges President Samia’s leadership in advancing reforms in the education sector, strengthening human resource development and elevating Tanzania’s diplomatic profile globally.
The university also cited her efforts to deepen international cooperation, attract investment and promote Tanzania abroad through key development sectors, including tourism.
President Samia received the honour while on a state visit to Russia at the invitation of Vladimir Putin, a trip that is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
The recognition comes at a time when Tanzania has intensified efforts to position itself as a competitive destination for investment and trade, while pursuing reforms aimed at improving education and skills development to support long-term economic growth.
Under President Samia’s administration, Tanzania has expanded diplomatic engagement with international partners, attracted record levels of investment commitments and increased promotion of its tourism attractions in global markets.
The honorary doctorate is among the highest academic distinctions awarded by universities to individuals whose work has made a significant impact on society and international development.

The ceremony in Moscow was attended by senior university officials, academics and government representatives, highlighting the enduring relationship between Tanzania and Russia, particularly in education, diplomacy and development cooperation.
