Muhimbili expands advanced cancer surgery through international medical camp

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has successfully performed 12 complex urological surgeries, including minimally invasive prostate cancer operations, during a two-day international surgical camp aimed at strengthening specialist healthcare services and medical training.

The procedures were conducted using laparoscopic technology, a modern surgical technique that uses small incisions, allowing patients to recover faster, spend less time in hospital and return to normal activities sooner than with conventional surgery.

Speaking after the operations, MNH urology specialist Dr Gift Daniel said the camp brought together experts from several countries to exchange knowledge and enhance the delivery of advanced urological care.

“During the camp, we operated on 12 patients with different urological conditions, including prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and renal cysts.

The success of these procedures demonstrates our specialists’ growing capacity to use modern technology in providing highly specialised treatment,” he said.

The camp attracted urology experts from Tanzania, China, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, creating a platform for professional collaboration and skills transfer.

More than 200 Tanzanian healthcare professionals followed the surgeries live online, enabling them to observe advanced techniques and benefit from practical learning without being physically present in the operating theatre.

Health experts say the initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of minimally invasive surgical procedures in hospitals across the country, helping to improve patient outcomes while reducing recovery times and pressure on healthcare facilities.

The latest achievement reflects MNH’s continued investment in advanced medical technologies and specialist training as it seeks to expand access to high-quality treatment for patients with complex urological diseases.
