The Government has officially launched the Board of Trustees of the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), in a move aimed at improving leadership, accountability, and the long-term growth of one of Tanzania’s most important heart treatment centres.

The launch was conducted on June 12, 2026 in Dar es Salaam by the Minister of Health, Mohamed Mchengerwa, who said the new Board will help strengthen the management of JKCI and ensure citizens continue receiving high-quality heart care services.

Mchengerwa said the Government is determined to ensure JKCI grows in line with increasing demand for specialised heart services in the country and beyond.

He noted that the new governance structure will help the institute plan better, manage resources efficiently, and improve service delivery for patients.

He explained that the Board of Trustees will serve as an important oversight and advisory body. It will guide long-term planning, support better decision-making, and ensure that public resources are used effectively to benefit citizens who rely on JKCI services.

The Minister said JKCI has continued to expand its services, with more patients seeking treatment both locally and from other countries.

Because of this growth, he stressed the need for a strong leadership system that ensures quality services are maintained while the institution expands.

He added that the Board will also help JKCI build stronger partnerships with development partners, the private sector, and international institutions.

These partnerships are expected to improve medical services, strengthen research, and support the training of specialised health professionals in Tanzania.

Mchengerwa further said the establishment of the Board comes at a time when JKCI is implementing major development plans.

These include preparations for heart transplant services, expansion of modern diagnostic facilities, and efforts to position Tanzania as a leading destination for medical tourism in Africa.

He called on the newly appointed Board members to carry out their duties with honesty, professionalism, and commitment to public service.

He said their leadership will be key in ensuring JKCI continues to be trusted by citizens as a centre of excellence in heart treatment.

The Board is chaired by Hassan Mshinda. Other members include Ambassador Mwanaidi Maajar, Professor Hussein Kassim, CPA Godfrey Kilenga, Dr Delilah Kimambo, and Professor Appollinary Kamuhabwa.

The Government said the new Board marks an important step in improving health service delivery in the country by strengthening institutions that provide specialised treatment.
