The Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) is using this year’s National Environment Week celebrations to educate the public on water conservation and the importance of protecting water sources, as the country intensifies efforts to promote sustainable environmental management under the Vision 2050 agenda.
The annual event, taking place from June 1 to 5 at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre grounds in Dodoma, is being held under the theme “Vision 2050: Let Us Take Responsibility for Greening Tanzania.” It has brought together government institutions, private sector organizations and development stakeholders to discuss environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable use of natural resources.
Opening the national celebrations, Deputy Minister in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Reuben Kwagilwa, stressed that environmental conservation must remain at the heart of the country’s long-term development ambitions.
"Environmental protection is not an option but a necessity if we are to realize the aspirations of Vision 2050. We must strengthen efforts in tree planting, pollution control, climate action and the implementation of green projects that safeguard our future," Kwagilwa said.
Through the Ministry of Water’s exhibition pavilion, DAWASA is showcasing its initiatives to improve water supply and sanitation services while educating visitors on the critical link between environmental conservation and water security.
"Protecting water sources is a shared responsibility. Sustainable access to clean and safe water depends on how well we conserve rivers, catchment areas and other vital ecosystems today," DAWASA officials explained during the exhibition.
The authority is also highlighting ongoing investments and projects aimed at expanding access to water services while encouraging citizens to play an active role in protecting water resources from pollution, encroachment and environmental degradation.
According to DAWASA, preserving water sources is essential not only for maintaining reliable water services but also for supporting public health, economic growth and environmental sustainability.
"Every tree planted, every water source protected and every conservation effort undertaken contributes to securing water resources for future generations," the authority noted.
As Tanzania marks National Environment Week, DAWASA’s participation underscores the growing recognition that water security and environmental stewardship are inseparable pillars of sustainable development and key to achieving the country's Vision 2050 goals.
