World boxing champion Terence “Bud” Crawford has arrived in Tanzania on a special invitation from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, marking a high-profile visit aimed at promoting the country’s tourism attractions and strengthening the growing link between sports and tourism.

Crawford, one of the most dominant pound-for-pound fighters in boxing, arrived at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, where he was welcomed by a large crowd of fans, sports stakeholders, and government officials in a vibrant reception that reflected Tanzania’s hospitality.

Speaking after arrival, Crawford said he was delighted to finally visit Tanzania, noting that he had long admired the country and was eager to experience its culture, people, and natural beauty firsthand.

“I am very happy to be here in Tanzania. I have always wanted to visit and see the beauty of this country, meet its people, and learn about your culture. The reception has been bigger than I expected,” he said.

He added that Tanzania stands out as one of Africa’s most attractive destinations, with rich wildlife, cultural heritage, and world-renowned tourism sites. According to him, the visit will also serve as motivation for young athletes, especially boxers, while helping to promote Tanzania’s image globally.

The visit is part of a coordinated initiative involving the Tanzania Tourism Board, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, and the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, aimed at using global sports icons to market Tanzania internationally.

TTB Director General Ephraim Mafuru said Crawford will spend one week in the country, during which he will visit some of Tanzania’s leading tourist destinations, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Zanzibar.

Mafuru said the programme is designed to showcase Tanzania’s unique natural attractions, wildlife, and cultural heritage to a global audience through influential international sports personalities.

He added that Crawford’s visit is expected to attract significant international media coverage, further strengthening Tanzania’s position as a leading tourism destination in Africa.

Crawford’s arrival follows a series of similar high-profile visits by global sports and entertainment figures. Recently, former football stars Didier Drogba and Rio Ferdinand also visited Tanzania under similar tourism promotion campaigns.

During his visit, Rio Ferdinand was appointed as a voluntary ambassador for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, as part of government efforts to engage global personalities in promoting Tanzania’s tourism brand.

Officials say combining tourism with sports promotion is a powerful strategy for reaching international audiences, particularly young people who follow global sports icons.

Crawford’s week-long tour is expected to further elevate Tanzania’s global profile, with his experiences likely to reach millions of fans worldwide through digital and media platforms, reinforcing the country’s image as a premier destination for tourism and sports.
