Tanzania, Russia hold talks to strengthen strategic ties

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania and Russia have stepped up efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation following discussions between senior diplomatic officials in Dar es Salaam aimed at strengthening partnerships in key economic and social sectors.

The talks, held on May 22, involved the Acting Director of the Europe and Americas Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ms Ellen Maduhu, and Russia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Andrey Avetisyan.

The meeting focused on expanding strategic cooperation in education, trade, health and investment as both countries seek to reinforce diplomatic and economic relations amid evolving global partnerships.

Officials said the discussions explored opportunities for increased collaboration that could support development priorities while creating wider economic benefits for the two nations.

Trade and investment featured prominently in the talks, reflecting Tanzania’s continued push to attract foreign capital and strengthen international economic partnerships to drive industrialisation and job creation.

The two sides also discussed enhancing cooperation in education and healthcare, sectors viewed as critical to long-term social and economic transformation.

The engagement signals renewed momentum in Tanzania-Russia relations, which have historically been anchored in diplomatic cooperation, technical support and educational exchanges.

Tanzania has in recent years intensified diplomatic outreach with international partners as part of broader efforts to diversify economic cooperation and position itself as a competitive investment destination in Africa.
