Tanzania Nursing leaders meet to strengthen maternal health services

Health directors from the Ministry of Health and President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), along with senior nursing leaders from regional levels, councils, national hospitals, zonal hospitals, regional referral hospitals, specialized hospitals, and coordinators of maternal and child health services, have met today, May 20, 2026, in Dodoma for the Annual General Meeting of Nursing Leaders.

The meeting has brought together nursing leadership from all levels of health service delivery in Tanzania with the aim of strengthening coordination, leadership, and performance in the nursing and midwifery profession across the country. 

It also includes regional coordinators of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health services as well as m-mama programme coordinators at regional level.

The main objective of the meeting is to provide a platform for sharing experiences, reviewing progress, and discussing strategies to improve health service delivery, particularly in maternal and child health services. 

Participants are also expected to address key challenges affecting nursing leadership and explore solutions to improve efficiency and quality of care.

The guest of honour is expected to be the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Seif Shekalaghe, who will officially open the meeting and provide key policy directions on strengthening health systems and improving service delivery in the country.

This year’s meeting is being held under the theme “Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery Leadership in Improving Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health through Innovation and Digital Transformation.” 

The theme emphasizes the importance of leadership development in nursing and midwifery, as well as the role of innovation and digital tools in improving healthcare outcomes for mothers and children.

Discussions in the meeting are expected to focus on enhancing leadership capacity, improving coordination between different levels of health facilities, and accelerating the use of digital health systems to support decision-making and service delivery. 

The meeting also highlights the importance of teamwork among health professionals in ensuring better health outcomes for communities across the country.
