Simba Queens edge Yanga Princess to boost title challenge

Simba Queens have strengthened their push for the Women’s Premier League title after a narrow 2-1 victory over rivals Yanga Princess in a tense derby played at Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.

The result adds valuable momentum to Simba Queens’ campaign as the season enters a decisive stage, with both sides fighting to stay in the title race.

After the match, Simba Queens head coach Mussa Hassan Mgosi said the championship race remains open and unpredictable, stressing that setbacks along the way do not necessarily rule a team out of contention.

He said collecting three points in such a high-stakes match was crucial for their ambitions and praised his players for their determination, discipline and ability to respond under pressure.

“We needed these three points and we have achieved that objective. I commend the players for their effort. Now our focus shifts to the next matches,” said Mgosi.

He added that the key to victory was the team’s ability to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes and take early chances, which helped them gain confidence and control the rhythm of the game.

Mgosi further emphasized that consistency in the remaining fixtures will be essential if Simba Queens are to maintain their challenge for the title.

On the other side, Yanga Princess assistant coach Said Maulid said lack of concentration at critical moments cost his side dearly in the derby.

He noted that although Yanga Princess created several promising scoring opportunities, poor finishing limited them to a single goal.

Maulid congratulated Simba Queens for their performance, acknowledging that the match was competitive and ultimately decided within the 90 minutes.
