Regional cooperation in the health sector continues to receive strong emphasis as global health leaders gather ahead of the 79th World Health Assembly WHA79, which is set to officially begin on May 18, 2026, in Geneva.

The Chief Medical Officer of Government, Dr Grace Magembe, participated on May 17, 2026, in two key activities held prior to the opening of the assembly, highlighting the importance of preventive health, physical activity, and strengthened regional collaboration.

Dr. Magembe first joined the “Walk the Talk” health promotion programme, an initiative designed to encourage communities to adopt active lifestyles, improve fitness, and strengthen immunity against non-communicable diseases.

The event brought together global health stakeholders in a symbolic walk aimed at promoting healthier living.

In another engagement, she represented the Minister of Health at a side meeting of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community) Ministers, held at Crowne Plaza Geneva.

The meeting focused on strengthening health systems across member states, enhancing regional cooperation, and addressing shared public health challenges affecting the region.

During the meeting, ministers also confirmed the appointment of Dkt. Ntuli Kapologwe as the new Director General of ECSA-HC, a decision expected to support institutional leadership and coordination within the regional health body.

Speaking on the sidelines of the engagements, Dr. Magembe said international platforms such as WHA79 remain crucial for building stronger partnerships, exchanging experiences, and developing resilient health systems that can better serve citizens across member countries.

She emphasized that Tanzania and other member states continue to benefit from regional and global cooperation, particularly in improving health service delivery and preparing for emerging health challenges.
