Nkanda hamlet gets electricity as REA expands rural power access in Ludewa

The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has continued to expand electricity access to rural and hard-to-reach areas, with Nkanda Hamlet in the Nyasa coastal area of Ludewa District, Njombe Region, now officially connected to power under the government’s rural electrification programme.

The project, implemented through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), is part of ongoing efforts to ensure rural communities benefit from reliable electricity to support economic activities, improve social services, and attract investment.

On May 25, 2026, REA Board members visited Nkanda Hamlet to inspect and commission the electricity project implemented by SUMA JKT Electric Company Ltd. The project was completed despite difficult terrain along the Nyasa shoreline.

Officials said the government continues to closely supervise all rural electrification projects to ensure they are completed on time and meet required standards for citizens’ benefit.

The Nkanda project is part of a wider government programme covering coastal and remote areas of Ludewa District, with an investment of more than TZS 3.2 billion aimed at expanding electricity access to households and businesses.

Authorities said electricity will help boost economic activities such as fish processing, milling, carpentry, and welding, while also improving access to social services including lighting for homes and public facilities.

SUMA JKT Electric Company Ltd thanked REA for the opportunity, saying the project was successfully completed despite challenging conditions.

REA officials added that the government invested about TZS 450 million to connect Nkanda Hamlet, reaffirming its commitment to bringing electricity closer to rural communities.

Residents were encouraged to complete internal wiring and connect to the grid to fully benefit from the new service.

Local leaders said the arrival of electricity is expected to accelerate development and improve livelihoods in Nkanda and surrounding areas.

Residents who already have electricity said it has brought relief and opened new opportunities for income-generating activities.
