Ruangwa District in Lindi Region is undergoing notable economic and social change driven by increased mining activities at Namungo Mine, operated by Elianje Limited. Small-scale miners and surrounding communities are now benefiting through job creation, local business opportunities, and a growing number of community development projects linked to mining operations.
The expansion of mining activities has contributed to improved access to clean water, education services, healthcare, and local infrastructure.
These developments have gradually improved living conditions for residents who, in previous years, faced limited economic opportunities and inadequate social services.
Speaking on behalf of the Lindi Resident Mining Officer, Engineer Dickson Joram said the situation in Namungo has changed significantly compared to 2019 when mining activities were still at an early stage.
He said at the time, most small-scale miners relied on low-productivity methods and struggled to sustain their daily livelihoods.
“Back then, many miners were facing serious challenges. In some cases, they could not even afford basic needs. Today, the situation has improved, with many people now engaged in more productive activities and earning better incomes through mining-related work,” he said.
Public Relations Officer of Elianje Limited, Joseph Shayo said the company, which began exploration and mining operations in 2020, has prioritized community development alongside production activities.
He said the company has drilled boreholes and extended water supply to Tongwe Village and Namungo Hamlet, helping to address long-standing water shortages. Efforts are also ongoing to expand access to clean and safe water in other nearby communities.
Shayo added that in the education sector, the company has constructed a nursery school, improved classrooms, built modern toilet facilities, and supported the construction of a primary school in Namungo Hamlet to reduce the distance children travel to access education.
He further noted that the mine has contributed to the improvement of local roads connecting villages and wards, as well as supporting schools with learning materials such as computers and printing equipment.
Chairperson of Chingumbwa Village in Mbekenyela Ward, Ruangwa District, Abdallah Manjakali said mining activities have opened up new economic opportunities for residents, especially in employment and small businesses.
He said household incomes have improved and access to essential services has become easier compared to the past.
“The presence of the mine has created opportunities for many people. In addition, the company has provided an ambulance that supports emergency health services for residents free of charge,” he said.
Manjakali said the cooperation between the mining company and surrounding communities should be strengthened and used as a model for responsible investment in the mining sector.
He also encouraged other licensed mining companies that have not yet started production to speed up development so that local communities can benefit from the country’s natural resources.
