The construction of the modern Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port in Lindi Region has reached 97 percent completion, marking a major milestone in Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to modernize the fisheries sector and strengthen the blue economy.
The project, implemented by China Harbour Engineering Company, has already completed key structures, including a 315-metre quay wall.
The main terminal building is also nearly finished at 98 percent, with final works currently underway ahead of official commissioning.
Once operational, the port is expected to transform fishing activities along the southern coastline by improving landing facilities, storage systems, processing capacity, and distribution networks.
It is part of the government’s broader plan to upgrade fisheries infrastructure and increase the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
Officials say the facility will enhance Tanzania’s capacity to carry out deep-sea fishing, allowing fishermen and operators to access richer fishing grounds in the Indian Ocean.
This shift is expected to improve fish production and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.
For years, fishermen along the coast have faced challenges such as lack of proper cold storage, poor handling facilities, and limited transport systems, which have contributed to significant post-harvest losses.
The Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port is expected to address these long-standing challenges by providing modern infrastructure that supports efficient handling and preservation of fish products.
The project is also expected to attract investment in fish processing plants, cold chain systems, and transport services.
This will help add value to fish products, improve market access, and increase incomes for fishermen and small business operators engaged in the fisheries value chain.
Economic experts say the port will act as a key driver of growth in Lindi Region and surrounding areas by creating jobs, expanding business opportunities, and increasing government revenue through improved fisheries activities.
The development also aligns with Tanzania’s blue economy agenda, which focuses on the sustainable use of ocean and water resources to support economic growth, employment, and improved livelihoods while ensuring environmental protection.
Once fully completed and operational, the Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port is expected to become one of the major fisheries hubs in East Africa, strengthening Tanzania’s position in regional seafood trade and opening new opportunities for exports and investment in the sector.
