Katavi Regional Referral Hospital expands services amid infrastructure challenges

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Health, has confirmed continued investment in the expansion and improvement of the Katavi Regional Referral Hospital, with priority areas set in the 2026/2027 budget to strengthen service delivery and address existing infrastructure challenges.

According to a public notice issued by the hospital management, the government has already identified key interventions aimed at improving the hospital’s capacity, including addressing the shortage of hospital beds and completing various construction projects within the facility.

The investment forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure that the hospital develops into a fully functional regional referral health centre capable of serving the growing population of Katavi Region and beyond.

The hospital management noted that Katavi Regional Referral Hospital is still relatively new and continues to undergo construction of several buildings.

Some sections of the hospital remain incomplete, a situation that has contributed to operational challenges, including limited space and congestion in patient wards.

One of the major challenges currently facing the hospital is the shortage of beds for patients, which at times affects service delivery. However, the management assured the public that the government is actively working on solutions, including expanding infrastructure and improving patient care facilities to meet increasing demand.

Among the planned developments is the construction of a modern mortuary facility that will meet the standards of a regional referral hospital.

The new facility is expected to improve the handling, preservation, and management of deceased persons, ensuring dignity and efficiency in hospital operations.

In addition, the hospital is implementing temporary patient accommodation arrangements and strengthening referral systems.

As part of ongoing service management, patients may be referred to Mpanda Mission Hospital when necessary, while Katavi Regional Referral Hospital continues to expand its internal capacity.

The transport system for patient referrals is being coordinated and supervised by hospital authorities to ensure safety, continuity of care, and accountability.

The management further emphasized that all patient transfer arrangements are being conducted under strict supervision to ensure that no patient is left without proper medical attention during the transition process.

This coordination is intended to maintain uninterrupted service delivery while construction and upgrading works continue.

The government’s continued investment in the hospital reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare services in Katavi Region and ensuring that citizens have access to quality and reliable medical care.

Once completed, the planned developments are expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve patient experience, and strengthen the hospital’s ability to handle complex medical cases.

Residents have been encouraged to remain patient and cooperative as construction and improvements continue, with assurances that the challenges being experienced are temporary and part of a long-term plan to build a fully functional regional referral hospital.

The Ministry of Health reiterated that strengthening regional referral hospitals remains a key priority in improving the national health system, particularly in underserved regions such as Katavi.
