Government orders review of fish farming facilities at Nane Nane for youth programme

The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has directed the government’s fisheries department to urgently assess fish farming infrastructure belonging to Hawa Fish Farm at the Nane Nane grounds in Dodoma, with the aim of incorporating it into the Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT Uvuvi) programme.

Dr. Bashiru issued the directive on May 21, 2026, after inspecting fish ponds located at the John Malecela Nane Nane exhibition area.

He said the government must move quickly to ensure that productive infrastructure is not left idle, especially when it can support youth employment and aquaculture development.

He questioned delays in responding to proposals submitted by the investor and called for improved coordination between government departments and private sector actors.

“We cannot run government services that affect people while staying distant from them. I want clear answers on why there was a delay in responding to this investor’s proposal,” Dr. Bashiru said during the visit. “We must also assess this infrastructure and determine how best it can be used.”

The minister further instructed the Director of Aquatic Resource Development to immediately evaluate the condition and suitability of the fish ponds and propose the best possible use after the investor’s planned exit.

He emphasized that the ongoing BBT Uvuvi programme, which focuses on empowering young people through modern fisheries and aquaculture, presents a strong opportunity to repurpose the facility for national benefit.

According to Hawa Gondwe, Managing Director of Hawa Fish Farm, the company had earlier submitted a proposal seeking compensation for the infrastructure so that the site could be handed over to the government for the establishment of a Central Zone Fish Fingerlings Production Centre.

She noted that about 30,000 fish have already been stocked in the ponds as part of the ongoing operations at the site.

The government is now expected to review the proposal and determine how best the facility can be integrated into national aquaculture development plans under BBT Uvuvi, ensuring that existing investments are not wasted and that the infrastructure continues to benefit citizens, especially young people entering the fisheries sector.
