The government is stepping up efforts to strengthen international livestock markets in strategic areas across the country, including Tarime Rural Constituency in Mara Region, as part of a broader plan to boost livestock trade and widen economic opportunities for pastoralists and traders.
Speaking in Parliament in Dodoma on May 18, 2026, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Bashiru Ally Kakurwa said the government was implementing several measures to improve livestock trading infrastructure and attract more cross-border business.
The minister was responding to a question from Tarime Rural Member of Parliament Mwita Mwikabe Waitara, who sought clarification on plans to establish international livestock markets in the constituency.
Dr Bashiru said Tarime Rural was among areas with strong potential for international livestock business because of its large livestock population and proximity to neighbouring countries.
“The government recognises the importance of improving these markets due to the high number of livestock in Tarime Rural and its strategic location near international borders, which presents major opportunities for livestock trade within and outside the country,” he told Parliament.
He said authorities were also encouraging traders and other stakeholders to make greater use of the Magena Border Market as an international livestock trading centre because of its favourable geographical and commercial advantages.
According to the minister, the government allocated Sh175.65 million during the 2021/22 financial year to improve infrastructure at the market.
The works included construction of livestock pens, a loading ramp, water facilities and toilets, with the project completed in full.
The improvements are expected to support smoother livestock trade, increase access to regional markets and strengthen incomes for livestock keepers and traders in the area.
