The Government of the Sixth Phase under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan has constructed 1,495.45 kilometres of tarmac roads and completed 18 major bridges within five years, marking a significant milestone in Tanzania’s infrastructure development.
The development was announced on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in Parliament in Dodoma by the Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, while presenting the ministry’s budget estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year.
Minister Ulega said the national road network managed by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has reached 37,734.41 kilometres, out of which 12,225.26 kilometres are paved with tarmac.
He added that at the time of independence in 1961, Tanzania had only 1,360 kilometres of tarmac roads, while successive governments from the First to the Fifth Phase built a total of 9,369.81 kilometres.
He noted that the current government has accelerated infrastructure development through road construction and bridge projects that improve transport efficiency and support economic growth.
For the 2025/2026 financial year, the ministry planned to construct and upgrade 450 kilometres of trunk and regional roads to tarmac standard, as well as 820 kilometres to gravel standard.
By April 2026, the ministry had completed 243.13 kilometres of tarmac roads and 94.36 kilometres of gravel roads.
On bridges, the minister said the government has completed nine major bridges, including Mitomoni in Ruvuma, Mirumba in Katavi, Nzali in Dodoma, Doma, Chakwale and Nguyami in Morogoro, Mkili in Ruvuma, Kalebe in Kagera, and Itembe in Simiyu. Construction of another 11 bridges is ongoing.
He further said preparations are underway for the construction of 13 additional bridges, alongside feasibility studies and detailed design work for various bridge projects in different parts of the country.
