ACT Wazalendo pushes grassroots membership drive in Pemba

Members of ACT Wazalendo in South Pemba have been urged to intensify grassroots mobilisation and recruit new members as the opposition party seeks to strengthen its political base ahead of future electoral contests.

The call was made by the party’s Information and Publicity Secretary for Mkoani Pemba Region, Muhammed Khamis, during a general meeting of the ACT Wazalendo Kitunda branch in Kiwani constituency.

Addressing delegates, Khamis said the party’s growth would largely depend on the commitment of its members to promote ACT Wazalendo’s agenda and attract more supporters, especially among the youth.

He said young people continue to face mounting socio-economic challenges, including unemployment, limited economic opportunities and unequal access to development benefits, despite being central to the country’s future.

“Youth are the backbone of the nation and must not be left behind. We need to engage them, listen to their concerns and offer hope through clean and transformative politics,” he said.

Khamis also criticised what he described as the use of employment promises during election campaigns without meaningful implementation afterward, arguing that many young people are often mobilised politically but later abandoned.

“We have seen many young people being promised jobs during campaigns and used as campaign machinery, but after elections those promises rarely materialise,” he said.

During the meeting, Khamis handed over electronic membership cards to 45 members of the branch, describing the digital cards as part of efforts to modernise the party’s membership system and strengthen internal organisation.

He also said the party continues to assess the outcome and conduct of the General Election held on October 25 last year, while encouraging members to remain united and maintain confidence in the party’s direction.

He stressed that discipline, solidarity and strong grassroots structures would remain crucial for ACT Wazalendo’s future political ambitions in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.
