Prof. Shemdoe urges regional leaders to strengthen council-level agricultural planning to boost food production

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, has called on Regional Commissioners across the country to ensure that local councils put in place strong and practical plans to increase the production of cereals and mixed crops, in line with good agricultural practices.

Prof. Shemdoe made the remarks on Wednesday in Dodoma at St. Gaspar Hall while closing a joint meeting between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO-RALG).

The meeting reviewed the implementation of the Cereals and Other Crops Regulatory Authority (COPRA) and brought together Regional Commissioners, Regional Administrative Secretaries, the Cooperative Development Commission, development partners, and various agriculture stakeholders.

He said adherence to good farming practices would improve both the quality and quantity of agricultural produce, making Tanzanian crops more competitive in external markets.

“When we adhere to good agricultural practices, we get better quality produce which, when taken to external markets, sells at higher prices, benefiting Tanzanian farmers,” he said.

Prof. Shemdoe also directed regional leaders to closely supervise the collection and proper use of internal revenues generated from agricultural production, noting that more than 75 percent of local government authorities depend on agriculture-related income.

He said improved management of agricultural revenues is key to strengthening the agricultural sector and boosting agricultural trade in the country.

He further noted that in the 2026/27 financial year, the government expects to collect more than Sh2 trillion, with mixed crops expected to be the main source of revenue.

He urged regional leaders to intensify efforts in increasing production to meet the target.

“In the 2026/27 financial year, we expect to collect over Sh2 trillion. The main source will be mixed crops, therefore Regional Commissioners must increase efforts in production to achieve this target,” he said.

On inter-institutional cooperation, Prof. Shemdoe commended the collaboration between the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO-RALG) and sector ministries, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, saying it has improved coordination in implementing development activities that directly reach citizens through regional secretariats and local government authorities.
