More than 100 companies, including those in the mining sector, are expected to participate in exhibitions organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA), which will be held at Sabasaba grounds in Njombe Municipality from April 24 to 29 this year.
The exhibitions form part of the activities marking the World Day for Safety and Health at Work and the national May Day celebrations, which aim to promote safe and healthy working environments across the country.
Speaking to journalists from the Journalists’ Union of Tanzania (JOWUTA), OSHA Southern Highlands Zone Manager, Wilbert Ngowi, said preparations for the exhibitions have been completed, with various institutions confirming their participation.
Ngowi said the event will also include the presentation of awards to companies and institutions that have demonstrated strong compliance with occupational safety and health standards, as part of efforts to encourage best practices in workplaces.
He said the awards will be presented on April 29 at the Agriment Hall in Njombe, where the Guest of Honour is expected to be the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities), Deus Sangu.
Ngowi added that the programme will also feature a special seminar for workers scheduled for April 27, focusing on workplace safety, health, and psychology. In addition, various sports activities will be held to promote unity and engagement among participants.
“We are well prepared for this year’s May Day celebrations and we are confident that the events will be successful. We also urge companies that have not yet completed their registration to do so through the OSHA system,” he said.
For the first time, the Journalists’ Union of Tanzania (JOWUTA) is also participating in the national May Day celebrations in Njombe and other regions, reflecting growing engagement of workers’ unions in occupational safety and labour rights awareness activities.
