Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reaffirmed the government’s support to the Zanzibar Law Society, praising the organisation for its role in helping citizens access legal services and promoting justice in the islands.

Dr Mwinyi gave the assurance on April 9, 2026, when he met the leadership of the Zanzibar Law Society at State House in Zanzibar. The delegation was led by the society’s president, Joseph Shaban Magazi.

He said the government recognises the important work carried out by the lawyers’ body in providing legal assistance and guidance to the public, noting that such efforts contribute to strengthening the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.

“The government values the work done by the Zanzibar Law Society in supporting wananchi on legal matters. Institutions like these play a key role in ensuring justice and legal awareness in society,” he said.

However, the President urged the organisation’s leadership to work with relevant stakeholders to find a lasting solution to challenges facing law degree graduates who fail to proceed with further legal training required to practise law.

He said addressing the issue is essential to ensure that graduates in the legal field are able to advance in their profession and contribute effectively to the justice system.

On investment matters raised by the society, Dr Mwinyi advised the organisation to conduct a thorough assessment and prepare clear plans before the government considers allocating land requested for investment purposes.

He cautioned that institutions given land for investment should ensure it is utilised effectively to avoid situations where land remains undeveloped for long periods.

The President also noted that Zanzibar is expecting faster growth in investment in the coming years as the government continues to strengthen policies that attract investors and ensure the availability of resources needed for development.

He further welcomed the decision by the East Africa Law Society to hold its annual general meeting in Zanzibar, saying the government will work closely with stakeholders to ensure the meeting is successfully hosted.

“This decision shows the growing recognition of Zanzibar as a suitable destination for regional and international meetings,” he said.

Speaking during the meeting, Magazi commended Dr Mwinyi for his leadership and efforts to open up Zanzibar to investment, describing the islands as increasingly becoming an attractive hub for business and professional cooperation in East and Central Africa.

Magazi said the government’s commitment to improving the investment climate has strengthened Zanzibar’s profile in the region.

During the meeting, President Mwinyi also handed over a vehicle to the Zanzibar Law Society to support its operations.

The organisation had requested the vehicle during previous celebrations of Law Day, saying it would help improve its ability to deliver legal services and outreach programmes to the public.
