Women working in Tanzania’s water sector have led a major environmental conservation effort by planting over 500 water-friendly trees at the University of Dodoma (UDOM) water source. The initiative was part of activities ahead of International Women’s Day 2026.

The Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Ms. Diana Kimario, joined female staff from the Ministry and its institutions in Dodoma, including the Wami-Ruvu Basin and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), as well as UDOM students, to take part in the exercise.

Speaking during the event, Ms. Kimario highlighted the importance of safeguarding both the environment and key water sources. “We are here to protect the environment and this vital water source,” she said.

The activity supports the Government’s ongoing efforts to conserve natural resources and ensure sustainable water services for communities. The Ministry of Water is also implementing a strategy to expand water supply infrastructure to 1,575 villages that currently lack access.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is: “Rights, Equality and Empowerment for Women and Girls: A Foundation for an Inclusive Vision 2050.”

The tree-planting exercise reflects the leadership role of women in the water sector, promoting both environmental stewardship and gender empowerment in Tanzania.
