Ahead of tomorrow’s International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, praised the remarkable achievements of African women, particularly their rise to top leadership positions, including national presidencies.

Speaking today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during her official duties for the African Union, Ambassador Mulamula expressed concern over ongoing gender-based violence, conflicts, and wars across Africa and beyond, which continue to disproportionately affect women and children.

“In celebrating this important day, we have an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made and chart the path ahead, guided by this year’s theme: ‘Justice, Accountability for All Women and Girls,’” she said.

“As the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security, I stand with women across the world, especially in Africa, to condemn acts of gender-based violence, unrest, and conflict, where the most affected are often women and children,” she added.

While acknowledging the challenges, Ambassador Mulamula emphasized that International Women’s Day is also a time to celebrate progress.

She highlighted the growing number of African women attaining top leadership roles across various institutions and sectors.

“Above all, we celebrate African women presidents, including Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwa of Namibia. We continue our work with dignity and determination. Let us keep praying for peace, stability, and lasting security for our countries and the African continent,” she concluded.
