Tanzanian women break barriers in mining sector

As the world prepares to mark International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, Tanzanian women are making history in the mining sector, challenging long-standing barriers and proving their economic prowess.

Asha Jama, co-owner of MCC Mahadeo Tanzania, a construction mineral mine in Ntyuka Village, Dodoma, says empowering women in mining is not just about gender equality, but a strategic move to boost inclusive economic growth.

“Women are now active across the entire mining value chain, contributing to national revenue through production and sale of various mineral products,” Asha told Madini Diary. She added that women’s participation strengthens family welfare and community development.

Ellah Christopher, who owns a licensed sand mining operation in Ihumwa, says women are increasingly taking charge of industries once considered male-dominated.

“Changing mindsets and greater inclusion of women in development initiatives have created opportunities for positive economic and social impact,” she said.

Ellah added that successful women entrepreneurs serve as role models, motivating others to pursue leadership and business ownership.

“A woman running a mining business not only demonstrates female potential in the economy but also supports community development and environmental stewardship,” she explained.

These achievements show that Tanzanian women are redefining the mining sector, proving that gender equality and economic empowerment can drive meaningful national progress.
