Tanzania has presented its ongoing transport sector reforms and infrastructure investments at an international transport conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Deputy Minister for Transport David Kihenzile represented Tanzania at the National Transport Conference (NCT), which took place at Gallagher Estate Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The conference was officially opened by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The meeting brought together transport leaders, policymakers and industry experts from across the region to discuss strategies for developing modern, integrated and sustainable transport systems that can support economic growth and social development.

During the conference, Kihenzile participated in a ministerial panel discussion focusing on leadership and governance in the implementation of integrated, sustainable and safe transport systems that promote inclusive economic growth, job retention and social development in Southern Africa.

In his presentation, the deputy minister highlighted major steps taken by Tanzania to modernise its transport infrastructure and strengthen regional connectivity.

He said the government has made substantial investments in strategic projects, including the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), improvement and expansion of ports, upgrading of airports and continued development of the national road network.

According to him, these investments are aimed at improving the efficiency of transporting goods and passengers while strengthening Tanzania’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

Kihenzile also emphasised the government’s commitment to creating a favourable environment for investors in the transport sector.

He invited both domestic and international investors to explore opportunities in various infrastructure development projects.

He said increased investment in transport infrastructure is expected to boost trade, improve economic competitiveness and accelerate regional integration across Southern Africa.

The conference provided a platform for participating countries to share experiences and explore policy approaches that can help build safe, resilient and environmentally sustainable transport systems capable of supporting long-term economic growth in the region.
