The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) is celebrating 50 years of transforming Tanzania’s trade landscape.
In a public ststement issued on March 19, 2026, Director General Dr. Latifa Mohamed Khamis reflected on the authority’s achievements, describing a journey that has connected local producers to global markets, promoted the national brand “Made in Tanzania,” and strengthened the country’s economic profile regionally and internationally.
“Over the past fifty years, TanTrade has been a bridge connecting local producers with global markets. This anniversary reflects not only the growth of our trade sector but also the unity and shared vision of Tanzanians committed to economic development,” Dr. Khamis said.
Central to TanTrade’s operations is the Sabasaba International Trade Fair, held annually in Dar es Salaam. The event brings together local producers and international buyers, showcasing Tanzania’s agricultural, industrial, and service sectors. Over 350 companies participate annually, providing a critical platform for expanding export opportunities and fostering business partnerships.
“The Sabasaba fair is more than a trade exhibition; it is a national platform that highlights Tanzania’s innovation and entrepreneurship. It opens markets, strengthens trade networks, and creates jobs, particularly for youth and women,” Dr. Khamis added.
Expanding Markets and Promoting ‘Made in Tanzania’
TanTrade has successfully expanded Tanzania’s presence in international markets, organizing trade missions and facilitating participation in exhibitions in countries including Oman, China, Indonesia, and Mozambique. Key exports, such as coffee, tea, spices, and industrial products, have gained global recognition, generating trade deals that increase revenue and enhance Tanzania’s economic profile.
The authority has also promoted the national “Made in Tanzania” brand to boost product value and national pride. “The campaign encourages Tanzanians to support local products and gives producers confidence to compete internationally. It is a critical part of our strategy to strengthen domestic industries and enhance the country’s global reputation,” Dr. Khamis said.
In line with global trends, TanTrade has introduced digital tools to improve service delivery.
Online registration for the 2026 Sabasaba Trade Fair allows participants to register efficiently, enhances transparency, and facilitates real-time data collection for planning and communications.
“Digital innovation allows us to streamline processes, reduce operational challenges, and demonstrate Tanzania’s commitment to modern, technology-driven trade facilitation,” Dr. Khamis noted.
Over the past fifty years, TanTrade has strengthened Tanzania’s trade integration with East Africa, Southern Africa, Asia, and Europe. These collaborations have expanded business opportunities, attracted foreign direct investment, and enhanced cross-border trade, positioning Tanzania as a competitive trade hub in Africa.
Dr. Khamis credited the achievements of TanTrade to the policy framework and leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. “The President’s focus on transparency, economic diplomacy, and private sector development has created an enabling environment for Tanzanian businesses to grow, compete internationally, and generate employment for youth and women,” she said.
TanTrade has called on investors, producers, and citizens to participate in the 50th edition of the Sabasaba Trade Fair, describing it as a platform to showcase Tanzanian goods, access new markets, and contribute to national economic growth.
“Participation in this milestone event is an opportunity to strengthen networks, foster partnerships, and collectively advance the country’s trade sector,” Dr. Khamis said.
TanTrade’s 50-year journey reflects a sustained commitment to trade promotion, innovation, and national development. The authority reaffirmed its role as a key facilitator of market access, a promoter of high-quality Tanzanian products, and a bridge to global markets.
“The golden jubilee is both a celebration and an invitation. TanTrade continues to drive economic growth, support exporters, and build a stronger, globally competitive Tanzania,” Dr. Khamis concluded.
