Tanzania Breweries PLC (TBL) marked World Water Day on Thursday by taking hands-on action to protect Dar es Salaam’s water systems, bringing together over 100 employees, city leaders, and community stakeholders for a clean-up exercise in Ilala District.
The activity focused on restoring an effluent discharge channel, a critical area for safeguarding surrounding water systems.
The exercise was conducted in partnership with the Mayor of Dar es Salaam City Council, Nurdin Bilal Juma, Ilala Municipal leadership, and local councillors, reflecting a shared commitment to urban water security and public health.
Neema Temba, TBL’s Corporate Affairs Director, led the initiative and emphasized the company’s long-term responsibility to water.
“Water is at the centre of our business and communities. We have a duty to protect it, both in our operations and in the areas where we operate. This initiative shows how partnerships can deliver practical solutions that support long-term water security,” she said.
She added that linking local action to wider environmental priorities is key. “Water stewardship requires consistent effort across communities and businesses.
Initiatives like this strengthen awareness and prove that real impact comes from action on the ground.”
Mayor Juma highlighted the importance of private-public collaboration in maintaining urban environmental standards.
“Keeping our city clean and protecting our water systems is a shared responsibility. Partnerships like this support our efforts to improve sanitation, safeguard public health, and build a more sustainable city for all residents,” he said.
Beyond the Ilala clean-up, Tanzania Breweries continues to invest in long-term water conservation projects.
In collaboration with WWF Tanzania, the company has installed solar-powered water infrastructure in Kibaha, supplying clean and reliable water to surrounding communities.
The projects also promote sustainable water use and ecosystem protection through nature-based solutions that strengthen local environments and catchment areas.
TBL and WWF are further working to restore and protect key river systems in Dar es Salaam, including the Msimbazi, Kizinga, and Ruvu rivers, which are vital for the city’s long-term water supply.
While the clean-up in Ilala is local in scale, it reflects Tanzania Breweries’ broader commitment to responsible water management. It demonstrates the power of partnerships between business, government, and communities in tackling environmental challenges through practical action.
