Tanzania and Uganda have reinforced their diplomatic and economic ties with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Fifth Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting on 13 March 2026 in Dar es Salaam.

The agreement paves the way for joint development of a modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connecting Isaka – Lusahunga – Murongo/Kikagati to Mpondwe.

The project is expected to streamline the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries, while accelerating trade and boosting economic growth across the East African region.

Officials from both countries emphasized that the SGR will enhance cargo transport efficiency from the Dar es Salaam port to Uganda and neighboring nations, driving regional trade and investment.

Beyond the railway, Tanzania and Uganda committed to implementing strategic measures to strengthen collaboration in transport, trade, investment, and infrastructure development.

The MoU underscores the strong historical and fraternal ties between the two nations and highlights a shared commitment to sustainable development that benefits citizens on both sides of the border.

The JPC meeting brought together senior government leaders and officials from Tanzania and Uganda, signaling a new chapter of partnership and regional integration.
