Tanzania and DRC meet to strengthen regional transport and trade cooperation

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today, March 18, 2026, held a joint meeting of transport sector experts in Kigoma Region, aimed at accelerating the implementation of strategic transport projects and enhancing trade between the two countries.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Prof. Godius Kahyarara, while the DRC delegation was headed by the Coordinator of Transport Corridors (CEPCOR) from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Connectivity, Mr. Roger Te-Biasu.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Kahyarara emphasized Tanzania’s commitment to continuously improving transport infrastructure, including the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the building of four new vessels, rehabilitation of the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), development of the TAZARA railway, and the upgrading of MV Liemba, all aimed at strengthening regional connectivity.

He noted that Tanzania will continue to work closely with the DRC to ensure the timely implementation of agreed projects. 

He further highlighted that the Port of Dar es Salaam, along with inland dry ports in Kwala, Ihumwa, Isaka, and the recently developed Morogoro facility, are being upgraded to meet the growing demands of the regional market.

On his part, Mr. Roger Te-Biasu expressed satisfaction with Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to enhance transport infrastructure, stating that such developments create significant opportunities for the DRC to benefit from maritime, port, and railway transport services.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA), Adv. Okandju Flory, commended the substantial improvements in ports serving Central Corridor countries. 

She noted that these advancements are driving trade growth among member states and added that the upgrading of Kigoma Airport will enhance the efficiency of international air transport and unlock further economic opportunities.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a joint communiqué by the Steering Committee and a field visit to selected transport projects, a move expected to strengthen the implementation of agreed resolutions and accelerate trade development between Tanzania and the DRC.
