Women employees from Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) in Kinondoni South have visited female inmates at Segerea Prison, donating basic necessities and sharing encouragement as Tanzania prepares to mark International Women’s Day on March 8.

The visit was organised by the TANESCO Kinondoni South women’s group as part of community outreach activities linked to the global commemoration of women’s achievements and solidarity.

Roseline Katanga, an accountant at TANESCO Kinondoni South, said the group conducts charitable activities at different institutions each year, but decided to visit women inmates at Segerea this time to show support to fellow women in difficult circumstances.

“We came here to show compassion to our fellow women inmates as we approach International Women’s Day,” Katanga said. “We collected several items through contributions from staff and management so that we could share this moment with them.”

She thanked the TANESCO Kinondoni South management and staff for supporting the initiative through financial and material contributions.

Segerea Female Prison Officer in Charge SSP Hamida Mussa Katanga said the visit had brought comfort and encouragement to inmates.

“On behalf of the leadership of Segerea Prison, we thank the women from TANESCO Kinondoni South for visiting us to mark their day here,” she said.

She said the visit helped remind inmates that they remain part of society despite their circumstances.

“When someone who is in prison receives visitors, it brings them comfort and hope. Their fellow women coming here to show love has given them peace and encouragement,” she said.

Reile Lameck, a technician at TANESCO Kinondoni South, thanked the prison authorities for welcoming the delegation and accepting the donated items.

“We also appreciate the advice and lessons we received during the visit, which serve as guidance to those of us outside prison,” she said.

International Women’s Day is observed worldwide with activities highlighting women’s achievements and promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
