TAMWA Zanzibar urges vigilance to protect children during Eid celebrations

As Muslims prepare to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the Tanzania Media Women’s Association – Zanzibar (TAMWA-ZNZ) has called on parents, guardians and the wider community to take deliberate steps to safeguard children throughout the festive period.

The organisation warned that while the holiday season is a time for joy and family gatherings, it can also expose children to risks if proper supervision is not maintained.

Festive periods are usually marked by increased social activities and public gatherings which, without close monitoring, may leave children vulnerable to violence and gender-based abuse.

According to TAMWA-ZNZ, incidents of child abuse are frequently reported in Zanzibar during major Islamic celebrations such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

The cases include missing children, rape, sodomy, child trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

Statistics released by the Office of the Chief Government Statistician (Zanzibar) for January 2026 show a worrying trend. A total of 113 abuse cases were reported during the month, of which 91 cases equivalent to 80.5 percent involved children.

The figures mark an increase compared to January 2025 when 103 cases were reported, including 87 cases, or 84.5 percent, involving children.

TAMWA-ZNZ said the statistics indicate that child abuse remains a serious concern and tends to rise during festive seasons when children are often allowed to move freely for longer hours in public spaces and celebration venues.

The organisation stressed that protecting children is a collective responsibility and urged parents and guardians to ensure that children do not attend celebrations alone.

Instead, they should accompany them, closely monitor their movements and ensure they return home safely.

TAMWA-ZNZ also advised parents to avoid assigning children the responsibility of supervising their peers, noting that they too require protection and guidance from adults.

Communities were encouraged to remain alert to suspicious behaviour and promptly report any concerns to the relevant authorities.

The organisation further appealed to the Tanzania Police Force to strengthen security measures during the festive season and intensify public awareness campaigns aimed at protecting children who may be at risk of abduction or sexual abuse.

Parents were also encouraged to speak openly with their children about personal safety, build their confidence to report threats or abuse and ensure they remain under the supervision of trusted adults at all times.

TAMWA-ZNZ emphasised that acts of abuse can be prevented if communities remain vigilant and actively reject such behaviour, noting that perpetrators are often people known to families or neighbours.

The organisation called on all members of society to take responsibility in protecting children and ensuring that the Eid al-Fitr celebrations remain peaceful, safe and joyful for everyone.
