The two-day Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers meeting wrapped up in Pretoria, South Africa, on March 13, 2026, with a strong focus on projects that directly improve the lives of citizens.

The gathering aimed to fast-track regional integration to boost job creation, enhance food security, and expand access to reliable and clean energy across member states.

Tanzania was represented by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr. Ngwaru Maghembe, alongside Deputy Minister of Finance, Laurent Luswetula.

In his closing remarks, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, who chaired the meeting, emphasized that unity and solidarity among member states are key to successfully implementing agreements that translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

Ministers highlighted the urgency of accelerating regional projects, including transport infrastructure, clean energy, and industrial investment, to create opportunities and improve living standards for people across the region.

The meeting also reviewed SADC’s 2025/2026 budget and began preparations for the 2026/2027 financial year, ensuring that funding aligns with initiatives that bring real impact to communities.

Members were warned about rising global political tensions and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which could affect regional economies, and were urged to remain vigilant to protect citizen welfare.

The meeting followed preparatory sessions by the Committees of Directors-General and Finance, which shaped the agenda and reviewed progress reports, ensuring that decisions made are practical and citizen-focused.
