Residents, particularly those living in rural areas, continue to place strong expectations on the government through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to improve living conditions through expanded access to electricity and clean cooking energy.

This was said by the Director General of the Rural Energy Agency, Hassan Saidy, who also called on employees of the agency to work with diligence, integrity and knowledge to ensure the government’s development goals are achieved.

Eng Saidy made the remarks in Morogoro while opening the Third Meeting of the Second Workers’ Council of the Rural Energy Agency

The meeting focused on reviewing and discussing the agency’s revenue and expenditure estimates for the 2026/27 financial year.

He said the agency’s employees play a critical role in delivering energy services that transform rural livelihoods and support economic development.

“My fellow employees, you are doing commendable work. Let us continue to ensure we serve the public effectively because expectations from us are very high,” he said.

“Today we are here to discuss our revenue and expenditure plans in order to implement and complete various projects. The REA budget has also taken into account the government’s priorities, including accelerating electricity connections to hamlets, increasing the number of customers and expanding access to clean cooking energy.”he added

According to Eng Saidy, the proposed budget for the 2026/27 financial year is designed to strengthen the agency’s capacity to implement its responsibilities while also improving the working environment and welfare of employees.

He also highlighted achievements recorded by the agency over the past 12 months, from the previous Workers’ Council meeting held in March 2025 to the current meeting in March 2026.

During that period, the Rural Energy Agency successfully extended electricity services to 3,532 hamlets across the country, equivalent to connecting about 10 hamlets every day.

“In the past 12 months we have distributed 400,000 gas cylinders and 300,000 improved cookstoves. We have also constructed modern cooking systems for 452 institutions serving more than 100 people each,” he said.

He added that the agency has also begun implementing a solar electrification project targeting approximately 20,000 households in 143 islands, while about three electricity distribution projects have been completed within the same period.

Speaking at the meeting, the Secretary General of the Tanzania Government and Health Employees Union, Hery Mkunda, commended REA for its continued commitment to implementing government initiatives aimed at improving the lives of rural communities.

“REA is doing great work. You have helped realize the government’s vision of transforming and improving the lives of people in rural areas. Anyone who comes from the village can testify to the impact of these efforts,” he said.

The meeting was also attended by the representative of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Wilson Nyamanga, the representative of the Treasury Registrar, Gerald Nzalalila, and the Dodoma Regional Secretary of Tanzania Government and Health Employees Union, Samwel Nyangwa, who also addressed employees during the session.
