Former Taifa Stars goalkeeper Steve Nemes has praised the quality of the latest national team squad, saying the players selected have the ability to deliver strong results in upcoming international friendlies.
He also welcomed the return of experienced goalkeeper Aishi Manula and forward Yona Amosi to the team.
Taifa Stars are expected to enter camp next Monday to begin preparations for two international friendly matches under the FIFA Series 2026, which will take place in Kigali.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, Nemes said the squad named by the technical bench reflects both quality and competition among players, something he believes will help strengthen the team.
He noted that Manula’s return is particularly important for the squad due to the goalkeeper’s vast international experience.
According to Nemes, Manula has spent many years playing at the highest level and can play a key role in guiding younger goalkeepers.
Nemes described the experienced shot-stopper as a “teacher” for emerging goalkeepers in the team, saying his presence will help improve confidence and learning among the younger players.
“First of all, I congratulate the coach for bringing back Manula together with Yona, who had previously been part of the national team before disappearing from the scene. Now he has returned and can add more competition within the squad,” Nemes said.
He added that healthy competition among players is important in building a strong national team capable of competing effectively in international matches.
Nemes also called on the players who have been selected to remain disciplined, work hard during the training camp and follow the instructions given by the technical bench.
He said every player must take the opportunity seriously and use the friendlies to prove their value in the team.
At the same time, Nemes advised the technical bench to focus on selecting a well-balanced lineup that combines experience and youth in order to build a solid and competitive national team.
According to him, the upcoming matches will provide a valuable opportunity for the team to test combinations, strengthen teamwork and assess players ahead of future international competitions.
Taifa Stars’ participation in the FIFA Series is expected to help the team sharpen its performance and gain crucial match experience as it continues preparations for major competitions ahead.
