Morogoro named centre of peace in Tanzania as DC Kilakala hosts Iftar and national prayer

The peaceful environment enjoyed in Morogoro Region has been attributed to strong cooperation among citizens, religious leaders and the government, with leaders describing the region as a model of stability in Tanzania.

Morogoro District Commissioner Mussa Kilakala said the calm prevailing in the region demonstrates how unity and collaboration can safeguard national peace.

Kilakala made the remarks while delivering the government’s message during an Iftar gathering and special prayer session for the nation that brought together Muslim believers, religious leaders and government officials in Morogoro.

He commended Muslim communities in the region for maintaining unity, tolerance and solidarity despite political challenges experienced in the country, including incidents of unrest reported in some areas on October 29.

Kilakala said residents of Morogoro should continue to act as the first custodians of peace by strengthening unity, mutual respect and tolerance within their communities.

“Morogoro has continued to remain peaceful because of the cooperation between citizens, religious leaders and the government. This unity must be protected because peace is the foundation of development,” he said.

According to him, the stability seen in Morogoro should serve as an example for other regions in the country, stressing that without peace it would be difficult to achieve meaningful social and economic progress.

The District Commissioner also used the event to highlight ongoing development projects in Morogoro District aimed at improving social services and stimulating economic growth.

He cited the construction of a modern daladala terminal near the Morogoro Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station named after former President Jakaya Kikwete, a project being implemented by the government at a cost of about TZS 13 billion.

Kilakala said the project is expected to improve public transport services in the town while opening up new economic opportunities for residents.

He added that infrastructure projects such as the Bigwa–Kisaki road are also underway and are expected to facilitate economic activities, particularly in agriculture and trade, by improving transport and connectivity.

The government has also continued to invest in the health sector in the district, with Kilakala noting that access to medical services has significantly improved in the two councils that make up Morogoro District.

Speaking at the gathering, international Islamic scholar Sheikh Rashid Mziwanda, who was the guest of honour, called on religious leaders to use their platforms to promote peace, love and unity among Tanzanians.

He said religious leaders have a crucial role in guiding society and should ensure their teachings contribute to national harmony.

“Religious platforms should be used to unite people and strengthen peace. It is unfortunate when some leaders use religion to spread divisions or unrest,” he said.

Sheikh Mziwanda urged religious leaders to exercise wisdom when addressing their followers and to focus on messages that build unity and social cohesion.

He added that gatherings such as the Iftar event offer an important opportunity to bring communities together and reaffirm their commitment to protecting the country’s peace and stability.
