Maigwisa claims PST with TKO over Mpenda

Boxer Joseph Maigwisa claimed the PST title after defeating his opponent Pius Mpenda via Technical Knockout (TKO) in the “Punch Ni Heshima” match held on March 21 at Kinesi Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Maigwisa secured victory when the referee stopped the fight in the ninth round after Mpenda began bleeding heavily and was unable to continue until the scheduled tenth round.

Speaking after the fight, Maigwisa expressed immense joy over his victory, thanking his fans from Dar es Salaam and Mbeya, as well as his coaches and team for their unwavering support throughout his journey to this achievement.

He described the win as the result of thorough preparation and strong determination to emerge victorious against his opponent.

“On weigh-in day, he promised to give me TZS 600,000 if I finished the rounds, and I promised to give him TZS 1,000,000. But I wanted to show my toughness,” Maigwisa said.

He also noted that for four years, his opponent had been avoiding him, so when Mpenda finally accepted the fight, he did not want to miss the opportunity to prove his abilities in the ring.

Meanwhile, Mpenda acknowledged his opponent’s superiority despite contesting the referee’s decision to stop the fight, claiming it was unfair.

He argued that the decision to halt a fight should be made by the ringside doctor, not the referee, and requested that relevant authorities, including the Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC), investigate the incident before officially recording the result.
